I made the front wooden front windshield center brace and outer aluminum retainer strip. What I am needing to know is how the OAT gauge is installed. The threaded portion is not long enough to go through all material, also the parts catalog shows using the two rubber washers and the metal washer leaving even less threaded area to go through material. The only solution I have come up with so far would require enlarging the hole from the outside through most of the layers of material so that the sleeve can thread on recessed. This however would leave a place for water to collect and eventually cause corrosion and water damage. Am I on track as to how it was or is there a better/correct way?

Matt: It installs behind the front spar. Look at Figure 9 of the Flight Handbook and reference drawings 76-61000 and 76-32200, page 3, Zones 3 and 4, there is a note to drill the 2nd hole to .375/.380. That should line up correctly behind the front spar.

I believe it depends on whether it is the earlier or later models. Mine is a L-5 Observer 42-98774. I am referencing the parts catalog figure 16 and the drawings it references which is 76-31030 that shows an enlarged hole on the fifth hole down from the top on the center retainer and shows the OAT gauged installed in that location. The drawings you referenced were for later models B – G. Does anyone have insight as to when the location change took place? I will put it in either spot I just want to know which is correct before I drill holes.

I just looked at the photo on the sentinel club.org main page and it shows 42-98998 with the OAT gauge on the front windshield center brace. So this being after my L-5 42-98774 shows the correct location for my L-5. So does anyone have any recommendations on how this is done?

Matt: Did some more chasing on stuff. Verify the OAT that you have is a C-13A. The A makes a big difference as the threaded section is longer and is for mounting on structure up to 1″ thick.
Per the b/p, the change occurred at 42-98797…L-5 C/N 761.

Ok that would explain it thanks. It likely is not.

Hi Matt , Craig is spot on. The proper OAT has a longer threaded section and fits the wood front bow depth.

Thanks for the photo comparison. I do not have the longer type. I will begin the search for one.
