The ignition cables that came with my aircraft are in good condition but eight of the twelve cables are too long, some by as much as a foot (may have come off a radial). Is there a place I can get these shortened to the correct lengths?
Thanks
Matt

Try Aircraft Ignition Services (AIS) in Dallas (Previously Joe’s Aircraft Ignition). I’m pretty sure they still do harness repair since the original owner died a few years ago, but if they can’t / won’t do it they ought to know who does.

Hi Matt, That looks like ones I have seen from Fresno Airmotive . You may contact them and see if they can rework the long ones.
Hopefully, I am attaching a photo of the O-435-1 harness lead lengths ( as measured from Ferrule to Ferrule). I am sorry I did not label which lead is for what cyl. But you should get the idea.

NOTE: These lead lengths only apply to those fabricated by Fresno Airmotive. The are measured from Ferrule to ferrule ( nut to nut). The are not the lead lengths for the original harness with 7mm copper wire and separate radio shielding. Those lengths are listed in post below and in O-435-1 Service manual. ST

Thanks I will check with both places. For the benefit of the group here is the lengths and installation from the Lycoming manual.

OK while we are talking Ignition harness, this is is a good time to bring up a magneto connection issue which is quite common. The Magneto cap has number assigned to each terminal 1 through 6. These numbers <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>do not</span> represent the Firing Order or Cylinder number like modern mags. In the 1940’s these numbers are the firing Event order. The O-435 Firing order is Cyl# 1 , 4, 5, 2, 3, 6. The Firing Event is #1 = Cyl #1, Event #2= Cyl#4, Event #3 = Cyl#5 and so on… The chart below may help explain. The confusion or rough running issue, when running a newly install magneto, comes from installing the leads at the mags using firing order instead of Proper Firing EVENT.

Ok while we are on the subject of ignition harness ….. There is a very important and often confused issue when it comes to connecting ignition leads at the magneto cap on SF6LN-8 mags. The magneto cap has numbers on all the terminal connection points .Back in the 40’s , those numbers were NOT assigned to the Firing order or the Cylinder number ( like modern mags). Instead, the number were assigned to the firing <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>event</span> order. The Firing order on O-435 is cyl # 1 , 4 , 5 , 2 , 3, 6. Cylinder number 1 is event #1, Cylinder #4 is event #2, Cyl#5 is event #3 …and so on. Chart below may help.
