Now that I’ve started flying my OY-1, I’ve noticed that I get a lot of radio static. I could hear center, but barely make out what they were saying through all the static. I’ve installed a noise filter on my generator, (that helped some) and will install magneto noise filters the next time I make it out to the hangar. I’ve also installed all the bonding braids per the drawings during my annual. I have not yet installed the static ground wire that was originally just forward of the tail wheel, but I have the wire (according to the drawings), just have not installed it yet. Since the L-5 apparently only had the ground wire that drug the ground and no static wicks, and many L-5’s that I’ve seen no longer have the ground wire, do many of you have radio static issues? Note also that my TKM MX11 radio was just sent to the mfr a few months ago and bench checked with no real issues found. I have checked the grounds for the radio, intercom and antenna as well. I have also installed a new Sigtronics SPA-400N intercom that is designed for loud warbirds/open cockpit airplanes. Curious what others have experienced and solutions you’ve found.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
Does the static change with engine RPM? Do you have static with the engine and Gen Off? Is there an auto squelch system in the radio or is there a “test ” position for the squelch. I am REALLY NOT a radio guy:) In the past we have run in to a squelch circuit which stayed active ( and was<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”> big</span> static source). Actually I guess the squelch eliminates the extra noise so I may have the active / off squelch function backwards.
This may sound silly , but have you tried another brand headset? One customer had some kind of internal amp in his headset and it would not play well (static and distortion) with new radio package .
I do not have the external static wick (ground contact) on my L-5. I get good clear reception on my a/c. No mag or Gen filter.
I guess I would be calling our local Avionics Shop for a diagnosis ,if it was here. sorry .
