Can’t thank you enough Craig. Thank you for taking the time and answering the questions I could not answer myself.
Here is the update.
Tore the entire tail gear out. Rebuilt the strut by cleaning, hand polishing the surfaces and installing new O-rings. I chose to fill it with 85-90 gear oil for stiffer action. Works just the way I want it to now. My spring measurement is 11.5 inches and in the l5 it is just there as a soft stop to limit strut compression so the spring is good. I cut and installed two 1/4 inch thick rubber bumper washers on each side of the spring for quietness. Easy to cut out if I decide I don’t want them later. Working on re-bushing all holes now.
Bought a new Scott 3200 (ouch) and sent that and my original housing to Sam Taber for his tailwheel upgrade. I already have the brake update on this plane so why not bring it all up to date? Look forward to getting that back and on the plane and hopefully put the known L5 tailwheel issues behind me (no pun intended).
Thanks Craig. Thanks for the great info. I think I have an idea how I will deal with that.
What about the tailwheel Coil Spring. Any idea what the length measurement was when it was new? What is the story behind re-stretching these things?
Thanks Sam for the heads up. I picked one up on ebay and a couple more from another source. Ed

Just finished the fuel tank repair. There was a very tiny seep on an old repair at the top of the tank that took the welder 15 seconds to fix. Pressure checked it thoroughly and reinstalled. It was nice to be able to do an in-depth inspection of the inside of the wing with the tank out. I was very pleased how everything looked and all glue joints were solid! I took some pictures of the job and I thought it would be appropriate to post here. Love how easy the Poly-fiber system is to work with.

Hi Daniel,
I’m only a couple of miles from where you are picking up the L-5. (WN35) If you want to have a look at my ambulance L-5B stop by. I currently have the left fuel tank pulled for repairs but it is a flying L-5. Awesome to have you aboard! Ed Soderblom 360-380-7337.
Just an update, my advertisement in Barnstormers has turned up several fuel tanks for the L-5. So far I have not found one in better shape than my left seeping one (usually they are dented worse than mine) so I have not bought one yet, but they are around. If you are interested I can forward phone numbers to you if you are looking for one. Once again, if you have an extra very nice left fuel tank you want to sell me don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thankyou Sam for the valuable information! It’s a very small seep and I will plan on removing the tank next winter when the weather turns south again. I won’t use it unless I need it for range occasionally as I don’t want to damage the wood. I will still try to dig up an extra tank until then after which I will get the original repaired and on the shelf for someone else someday. THANKYOU for the info. Ed
