Shimmy is done. Opted to convert the Lake to Scott thanks to Sam Taber. It made a huge difference in ground handling. I would say it is now like a heavy Citabria. The rudder is stiffer than the Lake, but it goes where you point it without braking as much as the Lake. It’s a nice clean setup. I did have to adjust my homemade taildragger dragger for the larger wheel. If anyone needs the remains of my Lake, pay the shipping and it is yours.

Sam,
I got some hangartime this afternoon and using tripod made a video of the slack from side to side and front to back. Doesn’t seem to be a way to post here but I sent it to your cell. It appears it is time for rebuild or replace. After being down for sump gasket year before and cylinder replacements this past year, I hate to be down again, but it’s far better than a trip thru the ditch. JG

Finally got hangartime. I jacked the tail up and played with the pivot point of the tailwheel and I have some play side to side and front to back. What are my options?
If I am understanding the instructions, the adapter replaces the temp probe plate and screen and there are no modifications to the oil cooler circuit. If so, it is a rather “simple” installation. Correct me if I’m wrong. I would like to install at next annual or oil change, whichever comes first.
Sam and Jim,
Thanks for the info. I’ve been unable to get much hangartime in the last week. I do have the wersja smooth tire. My geometry goes to the dark side when the tail is pushed down so I know that is an issue. I hope to jack up and check the play in the assembly this week.
Thanks Matt and Jim, I’m glad to know there is an STCed
unit available. I changed the oil at 20 hrs following the cylinder change because it looked dirty and in my mind I imagined particles like grains of sand grinding up my gold plated engine. Knowing now how difficult it is to find parts and pieces, I want to take better care of what I have.

I think I discovered the obvious. You have to subscribe to each topic. If you are subscribed to the forum, you receive the initial topic post then you have to click the subscribe button for each topic in that forum that is of interest to receive replies.
It’s not a problem with my posts or any that I respond to, it is the ones I do not participate in that there is no followup email. Many times there are posts by others that are of interest, but I have nothing to contribute but I’m interested in learning. Those posts only send the initial post and not the followup posts by others. I guess I’m lazy and looking for away to avoid logging in and looking through the posts.
Will it notify me on posts of others if I just check notify me without submitting a post?
John
Jim,
I figured out what I was trying to say about replies on the forums. I get the initial post but no follow up posts unless I reply to the post. I don’t know if there is a selection on my end or yours to get replies to the different posts without participating in the post.
John
Jim,
All the forums say “unsubscribe” at the top. I just did a search thru my emails and I stand corrected. It appears I do get emails on new posts. Apparently my CRS is progressing.
Thanks,
John
Sam, all seems to be good. I have not put that many hours on it since changing the by pass valves, but I have put a few and oil temps have ranged from 78 to 94c depending on oat. Weather and the new found relationship my wife and I have now found with our doctors in our advancing years has put a squeeze on my flying time. I have put about 20 hours on the new cylinders and have noticed in the last couple hours the oil consumption is going down. Checked compressions and the 2 new cylinders are in the mid 70s and 2 others are in the mid 7os and the other 2 are in the mid 60s.

Matt,
Checkout this link for mixture and carb heat control. It is very close to the original.

Jim,
I will begin the new project tomorrow.
Thanks,

More FYI. I pulled the bypass valves from my engine and the 2 spares. If I read the overhaul manual correctly, there is supposed to be 0.0015 to 0.0035 clearance between the cup and the plunger. If it exceed 0.005 it is to be replace. None of the 3 exceeded the 0.005. I was able to to get the best cup and plunger to about 0.002 and compared the springs and found 1 felt slightly stronger than the others.
On first flight I noticed the oil pressure was down maybe 5# to about 68#. It usually ran slightly above 70#, but the temp stayed between 85-88C. Hopefully this will fix my overheating problems. I hope too that if someone else has the same issue, it doesn’t take as long to run it down.
