Matt,
BEAUTIFUL restoration! Well done! I can’t wait to see it in person some day!

John,
Thanks for posting the pictures! I”m just getting ready to install the same kit on my airplane. I was struggling with where to mount the filter on the firewall where the bolts didn’t hit the tubing on the aft side of the firewall. Your pictures help a lot. I’ll have to adapt to the filter housing also. You don’t happen to have P/N’s for the adapter fittings do you?
Thanks,
Bill
Well, I can’t figure out how to attach a file to my post so I can’t share mine. Send me an email and I’ll send you what I put together. It’s based on T.O. 1L-5-6 Inspection Requirements 1955 revision. I’m an A&P/IA and do my own annuals. I’ve only had my L-5 for about a 1 1/2 years and I’m getting ready to my second annual on it. My email is bill.gorin@gmail.com.

Congrats Charles, Lanny and Gerry!
Sam, I’m sorry I missed you too. Hopefully next year we will have even more L-5’s and we can take up that whole area by the re-enactors.

Here are the clamps that Bill Tromblay made for me. I used AN900-28 gaskets and they fit nice. Bill included a set of the Harley gaskets with the clamps.

Thanks,
Bill Gorin
Thanks all for your replies. I spoke with Charles Rooks, and also with Bill Tromblay who reminded me that we had discussed this a few months ago. Sucks getting old. Bill Tromblay makes the clamps with 321 stainless steel, $300/set. Charles said he and his IA got frustrated with the Harley seals and has used AN900-28 copper crush gaskets and has not had a leak since.
Just waiting on the clamps from Bill now. Here is his contact info, he’s a SOPA member I believe.
Thanks,
Bill

John,
Thanks for updating us on the filter adapter. As I mentioned a while back, I had bought the 007A kit, but have yet to install it. Who did you talk to at Air Wolf, I need to exchange the A kit for the D kit too.
Bill
I just bought the Air Wolf STC for my plane (Kit AFC-K007 $700). It has an adapter that replaces the existing oil screen housing and oil temp probe boss. Two hoses attach to the adapter and go to the filter assembly that is bolted to the firewall. The kit works for just about all Lycoming engines so there are multiple sets of instructions. Look at the top of the page for the right instructions, the ones for the O-435 are the first set after the parts list at the front of the document.
I’ll install it at my next 25 hour oil change in about 6 hours. I also am taking an oil sample to send off for analysis. This is my first oil change since owning the airplane and I want to know how she’s doing. I will do samples at every oil change.
Bill
I am planning on putting an Airwolf remote filter on my airplane. There is an STC for the AFC-K007-K kit, it runs about $700. They also have an air/oil separator for the breather to keep more oil in your engine than on the outside of the aircraft.

Great info. Thanks Sam and Jim.

I just put this tire on my L-5 a couple of weeks ago. It’s probably the same tire you are taking off. The inner diameter is touch small, but a sanding drum on a drill took care of that. Desser does make the correct size tire for quite a bit more.

The B-29 “FIFI” and C-47 guys in our hangar have found a company that will make new expander tubes. They make expander tubes for Basler Turbo conversion DC-3’s, but apparently the oil field industry and big cargo and cruise ships also use expander tube type brakes to stop the engine from turning (much larger scale expander tubes – but the same technology). They are here in Arlington Texas, but you have to go through their distributor American Clutch down near Houston. The person to talk to is Heidi, her number is 281-443-9232. Be sure to mention what type of fluid you are using, so they can make it compatible. We had some DC-3 expander tubes that were not compatible with 5606 and leaked, a quick call and they fixed the issue with a different compound. They will need the spec’s for the original tubes or an original tube that they can reverse engineer. We have a guy here at the Vintage Flying Museum that has dealt with them a lot on C-47 brake tubes and he is willing to talk to them for the group and see if they are willing and/or able to help us. He said the C-47 tubes were about $1600 – $1700 each, about 8-9 months ago, however those are much larger expander tubes than what is on an L-5. We may be able to get the price down, if there is enough interest to get a run of them made and get a volume discount. Let me know if there is any interest in proceeding. I personally don’t need them, I have Cleveland’s on my L-5, but I am happy to help if I can.

Thanks Sam and Craig,
Let me know if I can help chase hardware or anything. Sam, that was some awesome luck to have it all fall in your lap like that!
Bill
This is what the parts manual shows for the internals of the booster

Bill
Thanks for the info Craig. Got any leads on an antenna reel? I need a reel for for mine.
